“ On October 28, the European Commission submitted to the Council of the EU a proposal to start negotiations on Ukraine’s participation in government satellite communications (Govsatcom) within the framework of the European Union’s Space Program and the EU’s Union Secure Connectivity Program. Source: correspondent of “European Truth” with reference to the words of the spokesman of the European Commission, Tom Rainier. Details: The European Commission wants Ukraine to join the European space programs. “We want to fully involve Ukraine in the government satellite communications program, also known as Govsatcom. Why is this important? Because defense and space are closely related,” Rainier said. He reminded that Ukraine is already fully involved in the EU program in the field of defense, and now “it’s time to do the same in the field of space.” “Ukraine’s involvement in Govsatcom will ensure safe space connectivity. This is of crucial importance for Ukraine’s competitiveness, for the country as a whole and for its citizens,” the spokesperson of the European Commission emphasized. As explained by the European Commission, the next step will be negotiations at the level of EU member states and the adoption of a decision by the Council of the EU to involve Ukraine in the European Union’s space programs. The final participation of Ukraine will be confirmed after the conclusion of the relevant international agreement in accordance with Article 218 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU). As a reminder, Govsatcom aims to ensure safe and stable satellite communications by combining and sharing existing satellite resources of EU member states and private operators. The first step towards Ukraine’s participation in the EU Space Program was taken in April 2025, when the EU and Ukraine signed an agreement on Ukraine’s participation in such components of the EU Space Program as Copernicus, Space Weather Events and Near-Earth Objects. As “Evropeyska Pravda” reported, in the context of Ukraine, the Govsatcom satellite network was considered as a kind of alternative to Elon Musk’s Starlink network. It was also reported that Brussels is studying the possibility of creating a new satellite network for military intelligence.”, — write: www.pravda.com.ua
