The south and west should brace for persistent rain and possible thunder and hailCredit: Story Picture Agency The Met office also warned that next week’s weather could be “potentially disruptive”.
Between 20-30 mm of rainfall is expected in 6-9 hours across south Wales, southwest England, Cumbria, southwest Scotland and Northern Ireland, warned the Met Office.
The showers are forecast to hit higher ground and could cause problems for the already saturated areas.
Experts explained: “given how wet it has already been, the additional rainfall, especially in western areas, could lead to localised flooding and travel disruption.”
Brits in the south of Wales and southwest England should be prepared for the odd rumble of thunder on Saturday.
Hail is also possible in some areas of the UK, particularly in the west and south.
The wet ground might lead to tricky travel conditions due to localised surface water issues, forecasters added.
“The best chance of any dry weather will be across parts of Northern Ireland, northeast England and southeast Scotland.
“Temperatures will be near normal to rather mild, tempered by brisk winds in the south,” said the Met Office.
Further rain is forecast for Sunday and will make its way across the country in a north-easterly direction. Those in northern areas should brace for persistent showers.
Looking ahead to next week, the Met Office warned that a potentially deep area of low pressure could cause more difficulties.
The Met Office predicts that next week’s forecast could bring about more weather warnings.
The Met Office’s deputy chief meteorologist Steven Keates said: “A deepening area of low pressure will approach the UK from the south-west later on Monday, bringing with it heavy rain and strong winds, which are likely to affect the UK between late Monday and early Wednesday.
“At present, the exact track, depth, and timings of this low are uncertain, which makes it harder to determine where will be most impacted by strong winds and/or heavy rain.
“This system has the potential to cause disruption, and severe weather warnings are likely to be issued over the weekend as details become clearer. We therefore urge people to keep up-to-date with the latest Met Office forecast.”
Despite heavy wind and rain, the temperatures are mild for early December.
The Met Office forecast for the remainder of the month is still unsettled with further areas of low pressure expected.
Meteorologists said it is still too early to provide an accurate forecast for the festive period.
Largely cloudy with showers and longer spells of rain. Showers in the west and south could be heavy with hail and thunder possible. More prolonged intervals possible further east. Windy for England, Wales and the Northern Isles.
Tonight
Showers and winds easing with clearer spells developing for a time, under which patchy frost may form. Cloud and rain returning to the southwest later as the breeze strengthens again.
Sunday
Dry to start in the northeast with patchy fog clearing. Rain, locall heavy, spreads northeast during the day, accompanied by blustery winds. Chilly in the north but milder further south.
Outlook for Monday to Wednesday
Somewhat drier and brighter on Monday, though showers still possible. Turning widely wet and windy into Tuesday, and remaining so in the north on Wednesday. Mild for early December.
