Two villages of Ukraine have entered one of the largest tourist networks in the world – “The best tourist villages” of UN Tourism. They became the village of Urych in the Lviv Region and the village of Vorokhta in the Carpathians.

This was reported in the reserve “Tustan”.

About 260 participants from more than 60 countries of the world applied for this competition. Ukrainian settlements were included in this international list for the first time in the history of independent Ukraine. This opens up great prospects for tourism.

“Urych and Vorokhta will not only receive mentorship from UN Tourism and potential financial support from foreign donors, but will also draw attention to their cultural, natural, and gastronomic riches of both Ukrainian and foreign travelers,” Maryana, head of the State Tourism Development Agency of Ukraine, emphasized. The winners were announced during the 122nd session of the UN Executive Council on Tourism, which was held in Cartagena (Colombia). The winners will be awarded on November 28 at the 3rd National Tourism Summit in Lviv. Official awards for Urych and Vorokhta will be brought to Ukraine by representatives of UN Tourism – Director of External Relations of UN Tourism Beka Jakely and Director of the European Region Kordula Vollmuter.

The initiative “The Best Tourism Villages” (The Best Tourism Villages) was launched by UN Tourism in 2021. The main goal of the global initiative is to draw the attention of travelers from all over the world to villages where tourism helps preserve culture, traditions and biodiversity of the surrounding nature. In May 2024, DART first submitted documents with applications from five Ukrainian villages.

The international network includes 190 villages from all over the world, this year 55 more were added, including two Ukrainian ones.

The village of Urych is known for its “Tustan” nature reserve, where a historical festival with the reconstruction of chivalry takes place every year on the site of a medieval rock fortress-custom house. In addition, Boyko culture, authenticity and architecture are preserved there.

“The world has seen and appreciated the efforts of several generations of the Tustani team – from research expeditions, preservation of monuments to the sustainable development of Urich based on heritage tourism. We are proud to be one of the first in Ukraine to prove the importance of the cultural heritage of a living village, its landscape, for the development of tourism in the community,” said Andrii Kotlyarchuk, director of the Tustan reserve.

The high mountain Hutsul village of Vorokhta in the Ivano-Frankivsk region is located at the foot of the highest mountain in Ukraine – Hoverly. It is known for its viaduct, at one time it was the center of ski tourism.

It should be noted that on November 28, 2024, the 3rd National Tourism Summit will be held in Lviv, which will be attended by representatives of the UN World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) — Beka Jackeli, director of external relations, and Kordula Vollmuter, director of the European region of the organization.
