Mobile operators “Kyivstar” and Vodafone Ukraine will exchange frequencies in the 2100 MHz range to optimize the operation of the 4G network.

The relevant decision was made by the National Commission for State Regulation of Electronic Communications (NKEK) at a meeting on January 15.

Decision details:

  • “Kyivstar” will transfer part of the rights to use frequencies (license) to Vodafone Ukraine within 24 regions.
  • Vodafone Ukraine, in turn, will transfer part of its frequencies to Kyivstar in 27 regions.

The exchange of frequencies will contribute to the elimination of spectrum fragmentation, which will allow the creation of continuous blocks of frequencies. This, in turn, will provide subscribers with a higher mobile Internet speed in the 4G network.

According to Iryna Chernyavska, director of the radio frequency spectrum department of NKEK, this case is the first precedent of the transfer of rights between mobile operators in Ukraine.

It was previously reported that Ukrainian mobile operators plan to start turning off 3G networks already this year in order to free up frequencies for the development of 4G and provide faster and better services.
