Tusk’s direct speech: “Finally, a breakthrough. A decision was made on the first exhumations of Polish victims of the UPA. I want to thank the Ministers of Culture of Poland and Ukraine for their good cooperation. We are waiting for further decisions.”
Details: On Thursday, January 9, the Minister of National Unity of Ukraine, Oleksiy Chernyshov, visited Poland, where he met with the Minister of Culture of Poland, Hanna Wrublevska.
“The ministers discussed the key role of culture in preserving national identity, as well as the impact of culture on the socio-economic development of both countries,” the Polish Ministry of Culture said.
The very next day, Friday, January 10, Tusk announced that a decision had been made on the first exhumations of the Polish victims of the Volyn tragedy.
Prehistory:
- We will remind you that in Warsaw it was said that the resolution of historical disputes will be one of the mandatory conditions for Ukraine’s accession to the EU.
- Earlier, the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance announced that it plans to include the search and exhumation of the remains of Poles in the Rivne region in 2025, responding to relevant requests from Polish citizens.
- At the end of November, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Poland and Ukraine, Radoslav Sikorsky and Andriy Sybiga, adopted a joint statement on the issue of exhumations, which has become a stumbling block in relations between the two states.
