Turkey is negotiating with the US to waive sanctions, which would allow the country to continue using Russia’s Gazprombank to pay for natural gas imports.

This is reported by Bloomberg with reference to the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey Alparslan Bayraktar, reports Ukrinform.

“Without exception, we will not be able to pay Russia… If we cannot pay, we will not be able to buy the goods,” Alparslan Bayraktar was quoted as saying by the publication.

According to the minister, if the exception for gas payments is not applied, then Turkey will have big losses. Ankara is proposing a partial waiver of Iran-related sanctions as a precedent.

Russia is the largest supplier of gas to Turkey, providing about 42% of its imports last year.

Citing anonymous knowledgeable sources, the publication reports that private talks took place in Ankara on Tuesday between the Russian delegation and officials from various Turkish ministries regarding alternative payment methods.
