Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, the recently appointed “special envoy to Greenland”, believes that US President Donald Trump wants the island’s independence, not its annexation, when he talks about his desire to control Greenland.

Details: Landry rejected the interpretation of Trump’s statements about US interests in the Western Hemisphere as imperialistic and pointed to Europe’s colonial past and that “the reason why Denmark owns Greenland is just imperialism.”

“I think the president supports (the idea of) an independent Greenland with economic ties and trade opportunities for the United States…

He wants the American economy to prosper, he wants good trading partners. And looking at Greenland, he thinks: “We have national security and defense interests here, we have a defense agreement from 1941, we have a military in Greenland, we can do more and offer more to Greenland than Europe,” Landry said.

The presenters pointed out to him that in recent decades, the US, on the contrary, has reduced its presence in Greenland – and can begin to restore it without any need to “take control” of Greenland. He avoided answering that argument and returned to the fact that Trump wants to revive the “Monroe Doctrine” and has his own vision, and it is “good for the American economy and those in the Western Hemisphere.”

When asked directly whether it is possible that the US will resort to forcefully taking control of Greenland, Landry said that he “doesn’t think” that such a scenario would happen.

“I think we can open up better trade prospects for Greenland. We can offer Greenlanders a path to their independence and a neighboring country where they can join the strongest, most advanced economy in the world,” Landry said.

It will be recalled that US President Donald Trump, in recent interviews after the US operation in Venezuela, once again declared his desire to control Greenland.

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that the forceful annexation of Greenland by the United States, if it happened, would mean the end of NATO.

Leaders of key European countries issued a joint statement regarding Greenland.
