Interlocutors noted that Lagarde was among those who left the event during Lutnik’s performance.
According to one attendee, Lutnik told the audience that the world should focus on coal as an energy source rather than renewables and made disparaging comments about Europe.
Before that, he wrote an article for the FT in which he noted: “We are not going to Davos to support the status quo. We are going to openly oppose it.”
He also wrote: “We are here in Davos to make it clear: with President Trump, capitalism has a new sheriff.”
One of the executives present described the atmosphere as “tense,” and another described it as “loud and sharp.”
Former US Vice President Al Gore was among those shouting the remarks, according to two executives present.
The US Department of Commerce said: “Only one person shouted the remark, and that was Al Gore.”
“I sat and listened to his speech. I didn’t interrupt him in any way. It’s no secret that I think the energy policies of this administration are crazy. And at the end of his speech, I reacted the way I felt, and so did several other people,” Gore said.
We will remind:
- US President Donald Trump, during his speech in Davos, mentioned the occupation of Denmark by Germany during the Second World War among the reasons why he wants to control Greenland.
- He also said that he saw no problem in buying Greenland from Denmark – the way the US got some of its territories in the past.
