In the charter of the new international institution, Donald Trump receives veto power, controls the agenda and can lead the council even after the end of the presidential term.

According to the draft charter sent to the capitals of the countries in recent weeks, the first and key chairman of the council is Donald Trump, writes The New York Times.

Article 3.2 of the charter clearly states that it is Trump who will have the right to veto all decisions, set the agenda, invite new members, be able to completely dissolve the council and appoint his successor.

A number of countries have already declared their support for the initiative. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, one of Trump’s closest allies in Europe, confirmed Budapest’s involvement, writing on Facebook: “If Trump, then peace.” Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Israel, Belarus, Pakistan and several other states also announced their accession.

A competitor of the UNAt the same time, the initiative drew sharp criticism from international experts. Cambridge University professor of international law Mark Weller called the project a direct blow to the United Nations. According to him, “this looks like an attempt to reformat the world order for one person and his vision.”

The Trump administration, introducing the Peace Council last week, said it would deal not only with the conflict in Gaza, but with a wider range of crises. The statute states that the purpose of the council is to “ensure durable peace in regions affected by or threatened by conflict,” effectively duplicating the UN’s mandate to maintain international peace and security.

Steve Witkoff, Trump’s peace envoy, said the council should become a platform for an “exchange of views” on conflict resolution, including in Ukraine, Russia, Iran, Sudan and Syria.

Trump himself admitted that the initiative actually replaces existing international mechanisms. He stated:

“I wish the United Nations could do more. I wish we didn’t need the Peace Council.”

The draft statute also provides for an entry fee of $1 billion for countries that seek to remain members of the council beyond a three-year term. Washington assures that the funds will be under the “highest financial control”.

Separately, it is noted that Donald Trump can remain the head of the Peace Council even after the end of the presidential term – in fact indefinitely, “until he resigns.” At the same time, the future US president will have the right to appoint a representative of the country to this structure.
