The standoff between residents and federal officials has grown increasingly tense since an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot American Renee Nicole Hood in her car eight days ago in Minneapolis, and protests have spread to other cities.

Trump’s latest threat came hours after an immigration officer shot a Venezuelan man who authorities say was fleeing after agents tried to stop his car in Minneapolis. The man was wounded in the leg.

White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt told reporters Thursday that Trump is the only one who can say what it takes for him to invoke the Sedition Act, but noted that his previous threat to do so “said very loud and clear to Democrats across the country.”

Direct speech Levitt: “That’s a question only the president can answer, but the Sedition Act is a tool at the president’s disposal. As you know, it’s rarely been used, but it’s been used by previous presidents in American history.”

“I think the president’s post at Truth Social has spoken very loud and clear to Democrats across the country, to elected officials who use their platforms to encourage violence against federal law enforcement officers, who encourage left-wing agitators to illegally obstruct legitimate law enforcement operations.”

Details: Trump has warned he may use the centuries-old law to deploy US troops in Minnesota as state and federal officials clash over tactics used by immigration agents.

At the same time, Reuters writes, Trump has already sent almost 3,000 federal officers to the Minneapolis area.

For reference: The Insurrection Act, first passed in 1792 and amended in 1871, authorizes the deployment of troops on US soil in certain situations. The law works in conjunction with the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, which generally prohibits the use of military force on US soil.

Trump previously threatened to invoke the Sedition Act and send in US troops in response to protests against ICE in Portland last fall. The last time a US president used this law was in 1992, when the governor of California asked President George W. Bush for help in fighting riots in Los Angeles.

We will remind:

  • In Minneapolis, an employee of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shot and killed a woman who, according to the American authorities, ran over law enforcement officers.
  • At the same time, the city mayor categorically denied this interpretation of events. He called the actions of federal agents “dangerous and irresponsible.” According to the mayor, the video recording of the incident does not support ICE’s version.
