Details: Trump noted that this data came to him from “a very important partner on the other side.” In addition, he specified that many executions were planned for today, but they will allegedly not take place
Trump’s direct speech: “That’s what I’ve been told, and I have good sources. We’ll find out. I’m sure if it does happen, we’ll all be very upset, and you’ll be very upset, too. But I’ve just been told that the killings have stopped, the executions have stopped. They’re not going to carry out the execution that many have been talking about for the last couple of days. Today was supposed to be the day of the execution.”
Prehistory:
- The current protests in Iran are one of the biggest challenges to Iran’s religious rule since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. They were provoked by economic troubles: rising inflation and falling currency rates. According to human rights defenders, the number of dead has already exceeded 500 people.
- January 11 Trump Iran publicly warnedthat the United States would “step in” and help the protesters win their freedom if the ayatollah’s regime resorted to deadly violence against the demonstrators.
- He said the other day that he was getting “hourly updates” on the situation in Iran and that the US military was “considering some very strong options”, including cyber attacks and direct strikes by the US or Israel.
- On January 13, the speaker of the Iranian parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, threatened Trump “an unforgettable lesson“, if the US strikes the country.
- President Volodymyr Zelenskyi reacted to the mass protests in Iran and called on world leaders not to waste the moment and help Iranians change the government in the country.
