Trump announced the withdrawal of the United States from the WHO

President Donald Trump announced the withdrawal of the United States from the World Health Organization.

The text of the decree cited among the reasons for the US withdrawal “the organization’s mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic that originated in Wuhan, China, and other global health crises, its failure to approve urgently needed reforms, and its failure to demonstrate independence from improper political influence of WHO member states”.

The decree also states that the WHO “continues to demand unfairly onerous payments from the United States that are significantly disproportionate to the accrued payments of other countries.”

“China, with a population of 1.4 billion, has 300 percent of the population of the United States, but contributions to the WHO are almost 90 percent less,” the White House points out.

The organization has not yet commented on this decision of the new US president.

Trump has long been critical of the WHO, with his administration formally withdrawing from the organization in July 2020 as the Covid-19 pandemic continued to spread.

On January 20, Donald Trump officially became the 47th president of the United States. The inauguration ceremony took place at noon in the Capitol Rotunda.
