US President Donald Trump on Saturday announced the introduction of tariffs on February 1 against a number of countries that do not agree with his position on Greenland.

Details: From February 1, 2026, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland will all face a 10% tariff on any and all goods exported to the US, he said.

From June 1, 2026, the tariff will be increased to 25%, he added.

Trump’s direct speech: “This tariff will remain in effect until an agreement is reached for the full and total purchase of Greenland… The United States of America is immediately open to negotiations with Denmark and/or any of these countries that have put so much at risk despite everything we have done for them, including maximum protection for so many decades.”

Details: He pointed out that the US “subsidized Denmark and all the countries of the European Union, as well as other countries, for many years without charging them tariffs or any other form of compensation”.

“Now, after centuries, it’s time for Denmark to repay the debt – world peace is at stake! China and Russia want Greenland, and Denmark can’t do anything about it… Only the USA under the leadership of Trump can play this game – and very successfully! No one will touch this sacred piece of land, especially considering that the national security of the United States and the world as a whole is at stake,” Trump is convinced.

What preceded: On January 14, Donald Trump said that NATO would become stronger if the US managed Greenland and called on the alliance to help.

Greenland’s government has said it will step up efforts to secure the defense of the Arctic territory under the auspices of NATO, and has again rejected US President Donald Trump’s ambitions to seize the island.
