Trump again announced plans to “take back” the Panama Canal

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, plans to establish control over the Panama Canal – he announced this in his inaugural speech on January 20.

According to Trump, the agreements regarding the Panama Canal “were completely violated.”

“American ships (in the channel – ed.) are paying grossly inflated prices and being treated unfairly, and this is especially true of the US Navy. And above all, China controls the Panama Canal, and we did not give it to China. We gave it to Panama, and we are taking it back,” he said.

At a press conference on January 7, Donald Trump refused to rule out the possibility of using military force to achieve his goal: establishing US control over the Panama Canal and Greenland.

Panama’s foreign minister responded by declaring that the canal’s sovereignty was “non-negotiable”: “the only hands that control the canal are Panamanian hands, and it will always be so.”
