“Just to be clear: this is a war that should never have started. If I were president, it would never have started. It should never have started,” he added.

The American president further stated that during his previous term, Vladimir Putin “did not have the opportunity to invade” Ukraine.

“And when I left office, bad things happened, bad things were said, a lot of stupidity everywhere – and we ended up where we ended up,” Trump believes.

Donald Trump’s administration is known to be keen to bring Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine to an end as soon as possible, although it admits it could take months.

In the first days of his presidency, Trump managed to threaten Russia with large-scale sanctions and tariffs if it did not agree to quickly conclude a “peace agreement”.

He also said he would push for lower oil prices to end the war.
