Origins of surnames in Ukraine

Surnames began to be actively formed among Ukrainians in the 14th-15th centuries. They arose on the basis of:

  • Profession (Kovalenko, Tkachuk);
  • Places of residence or geographical features (Polishchuk, Sparrow);
  • Family belonging (Shevchenko, Khmelnytsky).

Due to historical events, migration and the spread of the same names or professions, some surnames have gained popularity in different parts of Ukraine.

The most common surnames in all regions of Ukraine

  • Miller. This surname is associated with the profession of a miller – a person who worked at a mill. In ancient times, mills were important for the economy, so Melnyky are found in all corners of Ukraine. It ranks 1st in prevalence.
  • Shevchenko. The surname comes from the word cobbler (tailor, shoemaker). Thanks to the creativity of Taras Shevchenko, this surname has become a symbol of Ukrainian identity. It is found both in the central regions and in the west, east and south of Ukraine. It is the 2nd most common.
  • Kovalenko. Derived from the profession of a blacksmith. In the past, there were many blacksmiths in every village or town, so this surname is one of the most common. It is the 3rd most common.
  • Bondarenko. This surname has a patronymic origin, formed from the profession of a cooper — a master who makes barrels and other wooden containers. The surname Bondarenko is widespread in various regions of Ukraine, in particular in Slobozhanshchyna. It ranks 4th in prevalence.
  • Boyko. The surname Boyko has a unique origin and is most often associated with the western regions. However, thanks to migration, it spread to other regions. There are several versions of the origin of this surname, one of which is connected with the word бойкий — nimble, energetic. It ranks 5th in prevalence.
  • Surnames of Ukrainians are a part of the national identity that unites the past and the present. Family names that are found in all regions of Ukraine are evidence of how closely connected Ukrainian regions are, despite their regional peculiarities.
