At the January 14 meeting, the parliament will return to personnel appointments after the work in the chamber was interrupted on January 13 due to a lack of votes for key decisions.

As People’s Deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak reported in a telegram, the meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. with consideration of a package of resolutions on updating the leadership of the government and security measures. The main event should be the appointment of Mykhailo Fedorov to the position of Minister of Defense of Ukraine; the day before, deputies could not consider this candidacy, although Fedorov had already been dismissed from the position of head of the Ministry of Statistics within the limits of rotation.

At the same time, the Rada will make a second attempt to appoint Denys Shmyhal as the first deputy prime minister — minister of energy. During the first attempt on January 13, there were not enough votes for this decision, which led to a situation where the former head of the Cabinet of Ministers and the Ministry of Defense was left without a position after being officially dismissed by the parliament. Also on the agenda is a vote on the appointment of Dmytro Natalukha as the head of the State Property Fund of Ukraine; the candidacy of this year’s head of the economic committee has already been officially submitted by Prime Minister Yuliya Svyridenko and supported by the specialized committee.

A separate strategic block of issues will be the approval of presidential decrees on the continuation of martial law and general mobilization in Ukraine. It is expected that the deputies will support the extension of these measures for another 90 days — from February 3 to May 4, 2026. The National Security Committee has already given unanimous support to these draft laws under numbers 14366 and 14367, emphasizing the need to preserve the country’s defense potential to repel aggression from the Russian Federation.

We will remind, during the meeting on January 13, people’s deputies initially failed to vote for the appointment of Denys Shmyhal to the post of Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Energy, only 210 of the 226 necessary votes were cast for him. Then the parliament had to support the transition to consideration of the appointment of Mykhailo Fedorov to the position of Minister of Defense. People’s deputies gave only 206 votes for it out of 226 required.
