But those of us with longer memories will remember Tom Read Wilson’s game attempt to break into the music industry – almost a decade before his appearance in the Australian jungle.
The Celebs Go Dating receptionist was 28-years old and a relative unknown while featuring as a contestant on the fifth series of talent show The Voice UK in 2016.
But Wilson’s preference for theatrical, flowery language was well in evidence as he introduced himself before auditioning for judges will.i.am, Ricky Wilson, Boy George and Paloma Faith.
‘I would describe myself as gregarious, irreverent, fun, a little bit naughty, and rather chaotic – that covers everything, doesn’t it?’ he said during an address to camera.
‘I’d definitely describe myself as from another era. I’m a desperate romantic; I feel that when I meet somebody, I want a tsunami of warmth, and then the same back.’
He added: ‘When I perform I’m like a coiled spring. I know full well that I’m a bit of an oddity, but sometimes oddities can be a nice surprise. At least I hope the judges think so.’
Introducing himself as a ‘thespian,’ Wilson – who studied musical theatre at the Royal Academy of Music – later admitted he was ‘a cultural throwback’ while discussing his distinctive accent with host Marvin Humes.
However, his singing voice made less of an impact, with Wilson’s cabaret version of the much covered Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive – originally recorded by Jonny Mercer and the Pied Pipers in 1944 – failing to turn a single judge’s chair.
Despite the setback, the soon-to-be TV personality later admitted he ‘loved being onstage.’
‘It felt like I was surfing the crest of a great wave,’ he added. ‘It was wonderful. Regardless of the outcome, I just had so much fun. I couldn’t change it for anything.’
Wilson has impressed viewers and celebrity campmates alike with his extensive vocabulary.
Earlier this week, he stunned everyone around the campfire by adopting a thick cockney accent and joked that maintaining his usual plummy voice was ‘exhausting.’
The comment left viewers baffled as to what the Berkshire born star’s voice really sounds like.
His Celebs Go Dating co-star Anna Williamson subsequently waded in on the row – insisting that how Tom regularly speaks in front of the cameras is real.
She told The Sun: ‘Everybody is seeing exactly who Tom is. There is no act. It’s really funny, all the stuff around his accent and voice.
‘I’m so used to Tom being Tom, and Tom speaking as he does, which is his usual very posh voice. To hear such conversation around it, is it real, isn’t it, when he does his accent is really funny.
‘I can confirm Tom does speak how Tom speaks, as in his normal voice.’
She went on to praise seeing Tom ‘doing his thing’ on the ITV reality series, adding that he was ‘so accurately represented’ in the show as ‘hugely likeable’.
