“The fact is that, in a military sense, Russia is invincible. The further escalation of the war will lead to irreparable consequences for all of humanity and, first of all, for all countries that are directly involved in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict,” Tokayev insists, who regretted that “a good chance to achieve at least a truce was lost with the refusal to conclude the Istanbul agreement” (this refers to the ultimate demands of Russia in the first weeks of the full-scale invasion, which included, in particular, the reduction of the Ukrainian army and Kyiv’s refusal to join NATO – ed.).
“It is necessary to carefully consider all the peace initiatives of various states and come to a decision to stop hostilities, and then proceed to the discussion of territorial issues. In our opinion, the peace plan between China and Brazil deserves support,” he said.
Scholz disagreed with Tokayev’s proposal, saying that Berlin was supporting Kiev because Russia launched an unprovoked aggression against Ukraine in February 2022.
“It was and will be so that the country can defend itself and protect its integrity and sovereignty… It was Russia that not only started the war, but also continues it, and can contribute to its end at any time by stopping its aggression,” the chancellor replied of Germany
In June, more than 90 countries gathered at the Peace Summit organized by Switzerland and Ukraine. Russia was not invited to this conference, and Russia’s ally China refused to participate. Ukraine has put forward a peace proposal that involves the withdrawal of Russian troops from its territory. Another group of countries, led by China and Brazil, insists on an agreement that would allow the Kremlin to keep the occupied Ukrainian territories, which Kyiv categorically rejects.
