The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said that Ukraine needs to receive security guarantees in order to return to the negotiating table with the Russian Federation. This will help deter repeated aggression by Moscow in the future.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi said this in an interview with Polish media.

“Ukraine does not hold any behind-the-scenes talks with Russia. It is not in our interests. Because for us, losing the trust of our partners is a big risk. It is important for me to preserve the union between partners,” the head of state said.

The war can be ended diplomatically because it involves “less casualties and less time,” he noted.

“The main thing is that you can stop this hellish story. This requires desire. Even if one partner, such as the Russian Federation, does not want to, you can use the formula we are talking about – peace through strength, when partners unite and force the occupiers to dialogue. We are talking about dialogue. As of today, this is not happening,” the president said.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine needs security guarantees before moving to diplomacy. In his opinion, only security guarantees can deter repeated aggression by the Russian Federation and dictator Vladimir Putin.

“You can just talk about a ceasefire and give the Russians a pass to prepare for occupation, as was the case between 2014 and 2022. Therefore, it is important what the security guarantees will be for Ukraine, where is our NATO, where are our weapons, where is our support, etc. I have a very simple question, for example, we are not yet in NATO and diplomacy has gone, the million-strong army that is in Ukraine, now partners are helping, where will we find the money later to keep the million-strong army? It’s a fact that if you don’t have NATO, no support, air defense, general fleet, you have to rely only on yourself,” he said.

Ukraine remains steadfast in its position to refuse direct negotiations with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga said.

At the same time, Ukraine should be a mandatory participant in any peace negotiations with the Russian Federation, and Poland should also be included in them as a country that consistently supports Ukrainian independence and sovereignty, according to Polish President Andrzej Duda.

This year, Ukraine hopes to open up to six negotiating clusters on the country’s accession to the European Union. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that the Polish and Danish presidencies of the EU Council can contribute to this.
