TikTok is laying off hundreds of employees worldwide, including a large number in Malaysia, as it shifts focus to making greater use of artificial intelligence to moderate content.

About this informs Reuters.

Two Reuters sources said more than 700 jobs were cut in Malaysia. TikTok later clarified that the cuts affected fewer than 500 employees in the country.

The employees, most of whom were involved in moderating the firm’s content, were notified of their layoffs by email late on Wednesday, Oct. 9, sources said.

In response to Reuters inquiries, TikTok confirmed the layoffs and said it expected to affect several hundred employees worldwide as part of a broader plan to improve its content moderation operations.

TikTok uses a combination of automated detection and human moderators to review content posted on the site.

According to the company’s website, ByteDance has more than 110,000 employees in more than 200 cities around the world.

The tech company also plans more cuts next month as it seeks to consolidate some of its regional operations, one of the Reuters sources said.
