Details: Callas emphasized that the EU needs sanctions because “it is our leverage and it would be very strange to give it up.”
“Nothing has changed. (Vladimir. -ed.) Putin has not changed his goals, and nothing has changed on the battlefield. Therefore, there are no grounds for lifting sanctions,” added the top EU diplomat.
She explained that if the sanctions are lifted prematurely, “we will be in a much weaker position.”
“I also do not think that it is in the interests of the United States to abandon sanctions now,” Kallas noted.
Earlier on Friday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated that he is against extending EU sanctions until discussing this issue with the team of future US President Donald Trump.
This week it became known that the European Union is planning new sanctions against the Russian Federation, avoiding the veto of Hungary and Slovakia.
The EU is also developing additional measures, including using an 81-year-old law involving the Belgian king to protect sanctions against Russia after Hungary threatened to veto their extension.
