The recent series of strikes by Ukraine on Russian rear ammunition depots demonstrates how widely the Russian army takes advantage of the fact that its logistical support is still protected from the impact of strikes by Western long-range weapons.
This is written by analysts of the Institute for the Study of War, analyzing recent Maxar satellite images that show serious damage to three large Russian ammunition depots in the west and southwest of Russia after the Ukrainian strikes in September 2024.
These are satellite photos of damage at warehouses in Oktyabrskyi and Toroptsk of the Tver region of the Russian Federation and at a warehouse near Tikhoretsk in the Krasnodar region of the Russian Federation.

These photos show the destruction of dozens of ammunition storage buildings; railway cars, which Russian troops probably used to transport ammunition to warehouses; as well as a significant amount of likely rocket fuel tanks and other materials that “the Russians just left in the open,” ISW notes.

“Such crowded placement of a large amount of resources emphasizes the lack of operational security at Russian rear supply depots,” ISW experts note. Accordingly, they emphasize it once again proves how the restrictions imposed by the West have given the Russian command flexible logistical options without the need to properly protect their rear areas and military depots. These flexible capabilities, in turn, provided Russia with the opportunity to optimize large rear facilities in order to transfer large-scale [необхідні для війни] resources to Ukraine.

The fact that the Russians still use well-known logistics hubs in this way “is a significant vulnerability [армії РФ]which Ukraine could take advantage of if Western countries lifted restrictions against Ukraine,” ISW emphasizes.
The Institute for the Study of War continues to assess that Western powers could impair Russia’s ability to use resources effectively and at scale [логістику, техніку, забезпечення тощо]canceling the restrictions on the possibility of Ukraine’s high-precision strikes on Russia and forcing the Russian command to divide ammunition depots into smaller and less effective facilities, some of which would have to be located even further from Ukraine.
