The troops of the aggressor country of Russia captured the village of Vremivka as part of their efforts to encircle Velika Novosilka in the Novopavlivskyi direction in the Donetsk region and advanced in other directions of the front, says the summary of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) for January 17.
ISW cites geolocation footage from January 17 showing the occupiers planting a Russian flag in northwest Vremivka. The soldiers of the Russian Federation claim that their troops occupied the village “in three days.” In this way, the Russians continued their offensive in the area of Velika Novosilka, which stalled in December 2024.

It remains unclear whether Russian troops intend to directly attack Velika Novosilka itself, or whether they will go west and northwest of it to surround the settlement. But Ukrainian defense operations are likely to complicate the Russian offensive in both directions, ISW points out.
“Russian forces may intend to use their manpower advantage in the area to close a roughly three-kilometer stretch in the coming weeks between outposts of the intended front line of Russian forces north and west of Velika Novosilka, analysts say.

The advance of the Russian army in other directions is recorded. Under Pokrovskyas the geolocation footage shows, the invaders occupied the village of Yasenove, and also advanced along the left bank of the Solona River to the north of Uspenivka.
IN Kursk region the invaders advanced to the southwest of Viktorivka (southeast of Korenevoy). Fighting also continues near Suja. The Russian Ministry of Defense claims that they have retaken 63.2% of the Ukrainian salient in Kursk Oblast, but ISW estimates that the Russians have taken 50% of the land that the Defense Forces have controlled since the start of the operation in the area.

The Russians are also advancing on Kharkiv direction. According to ISW, Russian troops have recently made small advances to Zernova Street in the northern part of Vovchansk and along the road in the southern part of Tyche settlement. In the Kupyansk region, the occupiers are attacking along the P-07 Svatove — Kupyansk highway to the southeast of the city.
Near Toretska In the Donetsk region, Russian troops advanced along Lesya Ukrainka Street in the eastern part of Petrivka (west of Toretsk).
In addition, the ISW records the advance of the Russian army near Kurakhovoy — to the northeast of Suhy Yali and to the north of Burshtynovo.
