This year, about 252 thousand first graders have been registered with schools.
The Ministry of Education showed the first statistics of 2025 on the number of students / photos of UNIANIn Ukraine, there were fewer first -graders, and it has touched on many cities.
As noted in the response of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine to the request of UNIAN, about 3.5 million students will go to the school in the current academic year.
Of these, almost 2.3 million students study, mixed – almost 780 thousand students, and remotely 396 thousand students. This year’s first graders are approximately 252 thousand.
The Ministry of Education and Science noted that the final statistics, as well as the analysis of forms of study by classes will be known in the first half of September after reporting.
In addition, the ministry has given statistics in recent years on the number of students in schools in individual cities. The above data show that from 2018 to 2025 the number of first-graders decreased in the following cities: Uzhgorod, Lutsk, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Mykolaiv, Kherson, Odessa, Zaporozhye, Dnipro, Sumy, Kharkiv, Chernihiv and Kiev. Of these, the least first-graders in the 2024-2025 year of the initial year were registered in Kherson (1 thousand 126), Uzhgorod (1 thousand 536) and in Sumy (1 thousand 972).
In Kiev, in the 2018-2019 academic year, there were 297 thousand 361 students. Of these, 35 thousand 668 in the 1st grade.
In the 2022-2023 academic year of all students in the capital there were already 338 thousand 596, and first -graders – 27 thousand 398, and in the 2023-2024 academic year in total – 336 thousand 423, of which in the 1st class – 27 thousand 182.
In the 2024-2025, 334 thousand 959 students were registered in Kyiv. Of these, the first graders are 24 thousand 574.
In the Dnipro in the 2018-2019 academic year there were 100 thousand 366 students, of which in the 1st class-11 thousand 558.

In Nikolaev in the 2018-2019 academic year there were 45 thousand 606 students, including 5 thousand 679, and in 2024-2025-40 thousand 2 and 2 thousand 820 students, respectively; In Kherson, these figures were 34 thousand 255 and 4 thousand 577 children, 21 thousand 927 and 1 thousand 126 children.
Zaporizhzhia: in 2018-2019 – 68 thousand 268 students of total and 8 thousand 786 first -graders, in the 2024-2025 academic year – 82 thousand 911 and 4 thousand 681 children, respectively.
In Sumy in 2018-2019 there were only 28 thousand 156 students, of which in the 1st grade-3 thousand 396, and last school year they were already, respectively, 26 thousand 492 and 1 thousand 972.
In Chernihiv there were 28 thousand 987 students of all, of which first graders – 3 thousand 436 (2018-2019 academic year), and then – 27 thousand 216 and 2 thousand 132, respectively (2024-2025).
In Lviv, in the 2018-2019 academic year, there were 83 thousand 634 students, of which first graders – 9 thousand 616, and last academic year, respectively, 88 thousand 316 and 7 thousand 390.
In Ivano -Frankivsk, these indicators in the same years first amounted to 26 thousand 560 students only 3 thousand 160, and then – 30 thousand 610 and 2 thousand 682; In Ternopil – 27 thousand 510 and 3 thousand 253 students, 29 thousand 798 and 2 thousand 626.
More news about first -graders’ reductionAs it was reported, earlier Sergey Babak, People’s Deputy from the Servant of the People, Chairman of the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Education, Science and Innovation noted that this year about 252 thousand first -graders will be held to Ukrainian schools, while last year there were 314 thousand. That is, 62 thousand children are less.
According to him, the reasons for this are the fall of fertility and the mass departure of children at the beginning of a full -scale invasion of Russia. The deputy stressed that the number of first -timers would inevitably decrease.
