Scientists managed to find out how these birds perform such an acoustic trick, which turned out to be much more complicated than previously thought, writes Discover Wildlife, referring to research in the journal Current Biology.

According to the researchers, the song of such birds is created thanks to a fine-tuned combination of specialized vocal anatomy, precise breathing control and rapid switching between sound sources.

How do vashers create their song, similar to the sound of water?Like all birds, warblers make sounds using a syrinx – a vocal organ with two independent sound sources, one on each side.

“What is striking about Wascher’s syrinx is that the left pair of vocal folds is much larger than the right,” explained Franz Goller, a biologist from the University of Utah who led the study.

According to scientists, higher sound frequencies are produced on the smaller right side of the syrinx, while the larger left side produces lower sounds. By quickly switching between the two sides, washers create a gurgling effect that gives their singing a sound similar to the sound of water.

Scientists have also discovered that birds use an unusual breathing technique to create their melody.

As research co-author and neuroscientist Brenton Cooper noted, washers hold their breath for a short time to create pressure in the syrinx. When this pressure is suddenly released, it creates a sharp sound that resembles a splash.

Other curiosities about the animal worldIt was also reported that 100 million years ago there lived a spider-like creature that had a tail. According to scientists, the tail could have been a sensory organ for orientation in the environment or used as part of a defensive reaction to scare off potential predators.

Also, researchers once considered the platypus to be a fictional animal because they thought it had the beak of a duck, the body of an otter, and the tail of a beaver, making it impossible.
