The total losses of the military of Russia and Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale war of the Russian Federation in 2022 could exceed one million – this is the estimate given by The Wall Street Journal.

The publication relies on unofficial estimates, including from Western intelligence, saying that it is difficult to determine the exact number of dead and wounded, as Russia and Ukraine refuse to release official figures or have released figures that many do not trust.

The WSJ estimated the number of Ukrainian soldiers killed at 80,000, Russian at approximately 200,000. About 400,000 people in the Ukrainian army and 400,000 in the Russian army were wounded, the newspaper writes. High losses are hard to bear for the Russian army, the article says, but for the less populated Ukraine, they can be much more difficult.

Losses on the battlefield and the outflow of the population cause enormous damage to the future of the two countries, the publication writes. The population of Ukraine from 48 million according to the 2001 census could decrease to 25-27 million without taking into account the inhabitants of the territories occupied by Russia. According to the newspaper’s estimates, about 600,000 people, mostly young professionals, left Russia after the start of the war.

According to the Ukrainian General Staff, as of the morning of September 17, during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia lost about 635,880 of its soldiers, including 1,020 in the last day.

Russia and Ukraine give almost no information about their losses in the war. Moscow officially last named the number of people killed in September 2022 – then 5,937 people died. Kyiv did not do this for a long time, saying that the data would be disclosed after the war.

On February 25, 2024, for the first time since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced the number of dead Ukrainian soldiers: 31 thousand. At the same time, Zelenskyi said that he cannot disclose how many Ukrainian soldiers are wounded and missing. Also, according to his data, Russia’s losses amounted to 180,000 servicemen killed, and up to 500,000 wounded and dead.

Name lists of the dead are maintained, based on open data, by several teams of researchers and volunteers. One of these lists, which journalists of the BBC Russian Service, Mediazons and volunteers are working on, includes more than 69,000 Russian soldiers and officers.

British intelligence said on September 17 that Russian losses since the beginning of the invasion were estimated at more than 610,000 people killed and wounded.
