Details: The special prosecutor’s team is said to have demanded 15 years in prison for the wife of former president Yoon Seok-yeol.

But the Seoul Central District Court handed down a much shorter prison term for Kim, acquitting her of charges of participating in stock price manipulation and violating the political fund law.

The court also ordered the former first lady to pay a fine of 12.8 million won ($8,988).

Kim, who has been in custody since August 2025, has denied all charges.

The ruling made Kim and her husband the country’s first former presidential couple to be sentenced to prison on criminal charges.

Prehistory:

  • On January 16, a court in Seoul handed down the first sentence of former South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol on charges of obstructing attempts to arrest him after a failed attempt to impose martial law. The ex-president was sentenced to 5 years in prison.
