Kelly’s direct speech: “This is completely false – the US’s only role in the peace process is to bring the two sides together to reach an agreement. It’s a shame that the Financial Times is allowing miscreants to lie anonymously to spoil the peace process, which is now in excellent shape after the historic tripartite meeting in Abu Dhabi this weekend.”
Details: A source familiar with the US position told the Financial Times that Washington “is not trying to impose any territorial concessions on Ukraine.” At the same time, security guarantees from the US depend on the readiness of both sides to conclude a peace agreement, and its content depends only on Russia and Ukraine.
What happened before:
- The FT, citing sources, reported that security guarantees from the US for Ukraine would depend on Kyiv’s prior agreement to withdraw its troops from the unoccupied part of Donbass, as demanded by Russia.
- On Sunday, January 25, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, announced that the document on security guarantees from the United States is ready for signing.
- The publication Politico previously wrote that the US considers its security guarantees for Ukraine more valuable than European ones, despite Washington’s refusal to send its troops.
