What happens next depends on the decisions that have yet to be made. And leaders still have a choice between different scenarios
Last week, on October 23rd, I had the honor of giving the annual meeting lecture at the UK’s BEARR Trust, which is reproduced here with their kind permission.
I managed to ask a question that cannot be answered. It may be easier to answer once we know who won the US presidential election, although even then it would probably be unwise to jump to conclusions. Predicting the course of the war is a stupid exercise, especially without having access to the situation on the fronts or to the most secret conversations in the capitals of the respective states.
The history of this conflict is already littered with discredited expectations, both optimistic and pessimistic. Most importantly, what happens next depends on the decisions that have yet to be made. Governments still have a choice.
However, it is hard to avoid the question, “What next?” because it is asked so regularly and so persistently that it is not easy to put it aside.
