Chris Rea is widely recognized as one of the most recognizable voices on the British stage and the author of the hit “Driving Home for Christmas”, which has become an integral part of the Christmas season around the world. Released in 1986, the song returns to the charts every year and remains one of the most popular holiday songs.
Biography of Chris RheeChristopher Rea was born on March 4, 1951 in Middlesbrough, England. He was one of seven children in the family. He spent his early years helping in the family business – at an ice cream factory, which allowed him to buy his first guitar.
Ree only started playing music in his early twenties, inspired by blues and rock music, and initially played in local bands, including Magdalene. In 1977, he began a solo career, and in 1978 he released his debut album, “Whatever Happened to Benny Santini?”, with the single “Fool (If You Think It’s Over)”, which became a hit in the United States and earned him a Grammy Award nomination.
During the 1980s, Rhee gradually gained popularity in Europe. Although he was long unknown on the British scene, the Shamrock Diaries (1985) album with the singles “Stainsby Girls” and “Josephine” began to bring him widespread attention, and “On the Beach” and “Dancing with Strangers” cemented his position in the charts.
The following years saw the peak of his success: The Road to Hell (1989) not only topped the UK charts, but also became one of the most successful releases of his career, and the follow-up Auberge (1991) also reached number one in the UK Albums Chart.
During his career, Ria released more than 25 studio albums and sold more than 30 million records worldwide. He has been nominated for numerous music awards, including three nominations at the Brit Awards.
The musician was married to his long-time partner Joan, whom he met in his youth, and had two daughters. In the mid-1990s, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and had to have part of his pancreas and gallbladder removed, causing him to become diabetic. In 2016, Rhee suffered a stroke.
Despite numerous health problems, he continued to work, releasing the album “Road Songs for Lovers” in 2017 and going on tours.
