The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine voted for the decision to appoint Tetyana Berezhnaya to the position of Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy of Ukraine – Minister of Culture of Ukraine. According to the UNIAN correspondent, 266 People’s Deputies of Ukraine supported Berezhnaya’s candidacy.

The Prime Minister of Ukraine, Yuliya Svyridenko, presenting her candidacy at the parliament meeting, noted that in times of war, culture cannot be a secondary issue, because it is part of our national stability, identity, Ukraine’s voice in the world.

According to her, Berezhna has extensive experience in government, international projects and cultural diplomacy.

At the same time, she recalled that in her position as Deputy Minister of Economy, she implemented “large-scale programs in the field of support for the Ukrainian producer, employment, education, and development of human capital in Ukraine.”

Berezhna, answering the question of the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk regarding, in particular, the possible renaming of the changeable coin “kopey” to “shag”, said that she supports such an initiative. She emphasized:

“Regarding the exchange coin, I support everything that distances us from imperial symbols and we understand from which word the word penny comes. And here I absolutely support shag as Ukrainization, decolonization, de-Sovietization, de-imperialization.”

At the same time, Stefanchuk added that the time has come to “checkmate the Russian empire” in this way.

Speaking in the parliament, Berezhna said that “culture is the foundation of our state,” because it explains “who we are, why we are, and why.” According to her, culture is often underestimated, reducing it only to art or entertainment.

“Actually, the potential of culture is much wider. It can and should be an important tool of state policy, both economic and foreign,” she emphasized.

As UNIAN reported, on October 1, 2025, the parliament registered a draft law on changing the name of the changeable coin “kopey” to “step”. Its initiator was the Speaker of the Parliament Ruslan Stefanchuk and his deputies.

It was noted that changing the name of the exchange coin “kopyka” (one-hundredth of the hryvnia) to the historically grounded and specifically Ukrainian name “shag” will make it possible to revive the national traditions of Ukraine in the denomination of money and complete the monetary reform started in 1996.
