The US no longer objects to Ukraine joining NATO, this may also mean that Germany has also changed its position on this issue. This was reported by the French publication Le Monde on Saturday, October 19, citing sources.
As journalists note, on October 18, US President Joe Biden discussed in Berlin with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer the plan for the victory of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi.
The publication, citing sources, notes that the US is now not against a simple invitation to Kyiv to join the Alliance. This decision could also affect Germany, which also disagreed with Ukraine’s accession to the Alliance.
As an unnamed European official told Le Monde, if Democratic candidate Kamala Harris wins the US presidential election, Biden will start working on inviting Ukraine to the Alliance during the transition period.
Le Monde notes that the leaders of the four countries will not be able to resolve the issue of inviting Ukraine on their own. This requires the consent of all Alliance members, and Hungary and Turkey are likely to block this decision, the material said.
