The detachment is part of the regular U.S. presence in Romania, deployed on a rotational basis, and does not represent a troop increase. In fact, the US announced in October that it would reduce its military presence in Romania.
An important element of the army chief’s statement is the deployment of Abrams tanks, the main battle tanks of the US army, which are considered to be among the most advanced in the world. Romania is currently in the process of acquiring 54 Abrams tanks.
The Romanian army chief said he discussed the matter with NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) during his visit to Romania and that NATO would maintain its commitment to providing forces for the country’s defense in line with regional plans.
“The United States has agreed to maintain the same level of military contingent and, in addition, to improve the quality and combat capability of the forces deployed in Romania. The best example is the one that SACEUR also mentioned during his visit to Romania: in the near future, a detachment of American soldiers equipped with Abrams tanks will be deployed in Romania,” added General Giorgica Vlad.
In October, the United States announced that reduce their military presence in Romania, withdrawing the battalion from the rotational brigade assigned to NATO’s southeastern flank, but at the same time leaving about 1,000 servicemen in the country.
In addition to American troops, Romania hosts numerous European forces. The total number of American and European troops remaining in the country after Washington’s decision to reduce its presence is about 3,500 soldiers.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania, Oana Tsoiu, earlier reacted to the statements of the US president in Davos, where he also accused the rest of the NATO countries of ingratitude and expressed doubt that they would come to the aid of the United States if America itself needed help.
