The United States could impose tariffs of nearly 40% on Chinese imports early next year when Donald Trump’s presidency begins.
This was reported by the Reuters agency, which interviewed more than 50 economists.
The agency writes that such tariffs could potentially reduce the growth of the world’s second largest economy by 1 percentage point.
The poll also suggests that President-elect Donald Trump is likely to refrain from imposing a total of 60% tariffs on Chinese goods.
The vast majority of economists, both in mainland China and beyond, expect the tariffs to be implemented by early next year. The average estimate is 38%, with predictions ranging from 15% to 60%.
A majority of respondents said they do not expect a blanket 60% tariff on Chinese goods to be imposed in early 2025, as it could accelerate inflation in the United States itself.
Chinese policymakers, who stepped up stimulus measures to support economic growth since late September, will face mounting pressure next year to boost domestic demand to offset an expected decline in exports, a key driver of growth this year, analysts said.
