Direct speech: “We have offered Russia generous terms, including the lifting of sanctions. We have called on Russia to stop its attacks and hold direct negotiations with Ukraine on a peaceful settlement.
Unfortunately, the fighting continues, tragically causing more and more civilian casualties. We are also observing the invasion of the airspace of third countries, in particular our NATO allies – actions that create the risk of an even wider escalation of the conflict.”
Details: The ambassador also said that Ukraine’s counteroffensive actions have dealt significant blows to Russia’s energy sector and other critical infrastructure, limiting the Kremlin’s ability to finance the military economy. He reminded that Russia has suffered more than a million losses and is under the pressure of tough international sanctions.
Volz emphasized that the war cannot be ended by military means, so the leaders of Russia and Ukraine should start negotiations and agree to a ceasefire. In his speech, he called on the international community, especially European countries, to stop buying Russian energy resources.
The American representative clearly outlined the further actions of the United States in the event that Russia ignores calls for peace.
“We may introduce additional economic sanctions if Russia continues to ignore calls for a ceasefire. We will also continue to provide Ukraine with weapons for defense,” he said.
Volz separately focused on the issue of kidnapped and missing Ukrainian children, calling on the UN to strengthen efforts to return them from Russia.
“We ask all UN member states to join us in supporting these efforts, calling for a ceasefire and an end to this war,” Volz concluded.
