The UOC -MP gave a term by August to break relations with Russia

The State Service of Ukraine for Ethno -Policy and Freedom of Conscience has issued the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) a prescription on the elimination of violations of the legislation on freedom of conscience and religious organizations on revealed signs of affiliation with the Russian Orthodox Church by August 18.

Literally: “According to the results of the study on the presence of signs of affiliation of the Kyiv Metropolitanate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church with a foreign religious organization, whose activity is prohibited in the territory of Ukraine, the Metropolitanate of the UOC Metropolitanate has issued an order to eliminate violations of the legislation on freedom of conscience and religious organizations.”

Details: According to the study, the Metropolitanate of the UOC -MP has signs of affiliation with the Russian Orthodox Church, although it is trying to remove from its belonging to the Moscow Patriarchate.

In order to fulfill the order, the Metropolitan of the UOC MP Onufri must make the decision of the highest church authorities on: the exit of the UOC from the structure of the ROC and the loss of validity for the UOC of all provisions of the Statute of the ROC.

Also, according to the prescription, it is necessary to recall the clergy, monks, nuns of the UOC from the Holy Synod of the ROC, Bishops and Local Councils of the ROC, the inter-branch presence of the ROC, synodal departments and other leadership and canonical bodies of the ROC, as well as the canonical units.

The decision on the annexation of the Diocese of the UOC and the appointment of the ROC of the heads of diocesan departments of the UOC is also said about the need for invalid

The head of the UOC (MP) Onufri was obliged to publicly state orally or in writing about their disagreement with the appointment to the statutory governing bodies of the ROC and to prepare a corresponding application for termination of powers and termination of relations with the ROC.

What was before:

• On August 20, 2024, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law prohibition of religious organizations related to the Russian Federation in Ukraine. He envisages that in the case of identification of signs of affiliation of a religious organization with the Russian Federation, the dex must issue an order for the organization to eliminate them within 9 months.
• On May 9, 2025, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the procedure for conducting the study of the involvement of religious organizations in the Russian Federation, as well as the procedure for considering the issue of confirmation of the facts of the use of a religious organization to promote the ideology of the Russian measure.
• The Ukrainian Orthodox Church (MP) appealed this resolution in court.
• On May 20, the State Everal Staff began research on the presence of signs of affiliation of the UOC (MP) with a prohibited foreign religious organization.
• On July 2, Volodymyr Zelensky ceased the citizenship of Ukraine Metropolitan Onufri, the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. According to the SBU, he has a Russian passport.
