Details: The diplomatic effort comes as US President Donald Trump ordered a massive military build-up in the Persian Gulf, raising the stakes on whether talks can avert a strike on Iran and a wider regional war.
Turkey, Egypt and Qatar are working to arrange a meeting between White House envoy Steve Witkoff and senior Iranian officials in Ankara later this week, the sources said.
“The case has moved from a standstill. We are doing everything in our power,” a representative of one of the countries told Axios.
A representative of the American side confirmed that a meeting between the United States and Iran may take place this week in Turkey.
White House officials say Trump has not made a final decision on striking Iran and remains open to a diplomatic solution.
U.S. officials say Trump’s recent comments about the talks are not a bluff, but the U.S. does not know whether Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will allow his diplomats to hammer out a deal acceptable to the U.S.
According to the media, Trump asked his team to prepare options for quick and decisive attacks against Iran that would not risk a protracted war in the Middle East.
It was also reported that Trump received numerous reports from American intelligence that the regime in Iran is in the weakest position since the 1979 revolution.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that a US attack on Iran would lead to large-scale regional conflict.
