The United States became the only country among the 15 members of the Council to oppose this document. The resolution called for an “immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire” from all parties to the conflict.
The American side justified its veto by the fact that the text of the resolution did not include a demand for the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. The US insists that the terms of the cease-fire are closely related to Israel’s security, in particular because of the need for the release of hostages, which have become an important part of the negotiations.
The conflict in Gaza has been going on for more than 13 months, as a result of which almost 44,000 people have died.
