“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by enhancing the security of a partner nation that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe,” the statement said.
On July 14 last year, US President Donald Trump said during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte that he plans to provide Ukraine with weapons worth “billions of dollars”, which will be purchased by NATO.
The deliveries take place under the PURL program, which provides for the purchase of weapons (in particular, Patriot missiles) in the United States at the expense of European NATO member states. Previously, some of Ukraine’s allies announced restrictions on participation in the PURL program, as they supply weapons of their own, not American, production.
