US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz called the resolution a “strong political signal” that recognizes that Syria has entered a new era.
The delegate of Syria, Ibrahim Abdulmalik Olabi, welcomed the resolute support and commitment of the Security Council to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of his country.
He emphasized that Syria is turning the page of war and suffering, building a modern state based on the rule of law.
“Damascus continues to extend its hand to all the countries of the world,” said the ambassador of Syria, adding that the country will strive to become a meeting place between East and West.
What preceded: The US has proposed a draft UN Security Council resolution to lift sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who is due to meet US President Donald Trump at the White House next Monday.
For several months, Washington has been calling on 15 members of the Security Council to ease sanctions against Syria.
After 13 years of civil war, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was overthrown in December as a result of a lightning offensive operation by rebel forces led by the Islamist organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
KhTSh was the official wing of al-Qaeda in Syria until the severance of relations in 2016. Since May 2014, this group has been on the UN Security Council’s sanctions list for al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.
A number of HTS members are also under UN sanctions – travel bans, asset freezes and arms embargoes.

The American president announced that he would begin normalizing relations with Syria and lift sanctions against it to give the country a “chance for peace” after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
