In 2025, the pace of Ukrainization of social networks has significantly accelerated, and the fulfillment of the requirements of language legislation in the Internet space shows positive dynamics.
This was reported by the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language Olena Ivanovska.
“After a sharp surge in 2022-2023 and a certain slowdown in 2024, the pace of Ukrainization of the Ukrainian segment of social networks is again being recorded,” Ivanovska’s press service quotes the results of the discussion of the state of compliance with language legislation and the presentation of a study on the use of Ukrainian and Russian languages on the Internet in 2025.
According to the commissioner, the research of the Center for Content Analysis showed an increase in the share of Ukrainian-language content and a decrease in the presence of the Russian language in the public digital space.
Especially noticeable growth is observed on platforms that influence the language practices of teenagers: YouTube (+19%) and TikTok (+29%).
Ivanovska also noted the regional aspect: “In 2025, the Dnipropetrovsk region will overtake even Kyiv in terms of the rate of Ukrainization of posts, showing a growth of 15.3%.”
She emphasized that the language issue on the Internet remains sensitive and requires constant attention from both the state and the owners of online resources.
Among the key recommendations of the Commissioner:
-
limit the algorithmic promotion and monetization of Russian-language content of the aggressor state;
-
form a long-term state policy of support for Ukrainian-speaking creative and cultural industries;
-
strengthen work with young people in the field of language stability and media literacy;
-
to more actively involve local self-government bodies, business and civil society in the formation of the Ukrainian language norm in the digital space
Before that, the government commissioner for the protection of the state language, Taras Kremin, rejected the statements of the special representative of the US president in the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, that Russia could retain control over five regions of Ukraine because of their Russian-speaking.
Former Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal answered on a petition to block Russian-language songs on streaming platforms in Ukraine. The head of the government noted that there are no legal grounds for banning or restricting a musical product based on language in international law, Ukrainian legislation, and the broadcasting rules of foreign platforms.
