As Dmytro Lubinets, the Verkhovna Rada’s human rights commissioner, reported in Telegram, this was discussed during a meeting with family members of captured servicemen of military unit 3033.
Representatives of the Coordinating Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, the Joint Center under the SBU, the Ministry of Reintegration, the NIBU, the National Guard, and a representative of the military unit answered the questions of native soldiers who were captured.
First of all, the family members were interested in why representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross were not present at the meeting.
Yuriy Kovbasa, representative of the commissioner, answered this question: “ICRC representatives reported that they work with private data, so citizens can contact them privately.”
Answering the question: “Is the Ukrainian side aware of the state of health of our prisoners of war?”, the representative of the ombudsman noted that Russia still does not comply with the Geneva Conventions, and this can be seen from the state in which the soldiers return home after being captured.
“However, it finally became known that the Russian Federation agreed to the visit of the Chief Ombudsman of Turkey, Sheref Malcoch, who, as in Ukraine, will visit places where prisoners of war are held. The date of his visit is still unknown,” said Lubinets.
In addition, the priority set out in the Geneva Conventions regarding the repatriation of prisoners of war – the seriously ill, seriously wounded and women – was explained to the relatives.
“Also, the principle of justice applies here to return as soon as possible those who have been held in enemy captivity since 2014; those who were captured, or are considered missing or dead from the same family; convicts Fortunately, in 2024, Ukraine manages to return such a category of citizens to the Motherland,” Lubinets noted.
He added that it was possible to return 3,767 citizens of Ukraine from enemy captivity, Qatar and the UAE are helping in this process.
Recently, a new camp for Russian prisoners of war – “Center-5” – was opened in Ukraine, in which special conditions have been created for keeping wounded prisoners of war.
Ukraine cannot afford to treat captured Russians the way Ukrainians are treated in the Russian Federation. But they will not have a full resort.
