WP writes that the Trump administration is looking for contractors to help it reform the immigration detention system in the United States. According to the draft tender, the plan calls for the reconstruction of industrial premises to simultaneously house more than 80,000 detained immigrants.

Detainees will be registered at the processing centers for several weeks and then sent to one of seven large centers, each holding between 5,000 and 10,000 people, where the immigrants will be prepared for deportation.

The large converted centers will be located near major logistics hubs in Virginia, Texas, Louisiana, Arizona, Georgia and Missouri. Another 16 smaller centers will accommodate up to 1,500 people each.

The draft tender, the publication notes, is not final and may be changed.

Tricia McLaughlin, a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security, said she was “unable to confirm” information about such centers and declined to answer questions about the plan to renovate the industrial facilities.

Literally from the publication: “The plan for the centers would be the next step in President Donald Trump’s campaign to detain and deport millions of immigrants, which began with a hasty expansion of the nation’s immigration detention system, the largest in the world. Armed with $45 billion in congressional appropriations to detain immigrants, his administration this year has rehabilitated defunct prisons, repurposed parts of military bases and struck partnership deals with Republican governors for the construction of camps for immigrants in remote regions”.

Details: The new facilities will “maximize efficiency, minimize costs, reduce processing times, limit length of stay, expedite the removal process, and promote the safety, dignity and respect of all those in ICE custody,” according to the tender announcement.

The announcement also adds that ICE plans to modernize the buildings by creating residential units with showers and toilets, kitchens, dining areas, medical units, indoor and outdoor recreation areas, law libraries and administrative offices. Some properties will include accommodation for dependent families.

Earlier this month, ICE detained more than 68,000 people, the highest number on record, according to the agency. Nearly half, or 48 percent, of those individuals have no criminal record or pending criminal charges, according to ICE data.

Prehistory:

  • The Trump administration has decided to revoke the temporary legal status of 530,000 citizens of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela, which could leave many of them vulnerable to deportation.
  • According to The Washington Post, the Trump administration is developing a plan for mass deportation, with the figure of 1 million people per year mentioned in the conversations.
  • At the end of April, Trump said that his country needs a “bold justice” to implement a tough migration policy.
  • The Trump administration plans to use up to $250 million allocated for foreign aid to finance the voluntary return home of refugees from various countries, including Ukraine.
