Direct speech of the State Secretary: “I believe that the new administration is in such a position that when and if the Ukrainians want and decide (to hold negotiations, – ed.) – it can help to reach a good agreement.”

Details: He emphasized that for a good agreement, it is necessary to achieve a cease-fire, which should be stable and long-lasting and not give Putin the opportunity to rest, rearm and return to aggression.

“Any ceasefire must include the effective deterrence necessary to prevent him (Putin, Ed.) from attacking again,” Blinken said.

He noted that there are many ways to do this, and the current administration has discussed them with European partners and shared them with the incoming Trump administration.

The Secretary of State emphasized that Joe Biden’s administration helped Ukraine to ensure that “Putin’s plan to erase Ukraine from the map, to include it in Russia in order to implement his imperial plans” did not materialize.

He also added that the impact on the Russian economy is already visible, and that “the burden that the current administration has placed on Russia is getting heavier.”

“Ukraine is standing, and that’s the most important thing,” Blinken said.

Summing up, he expressed hope that the next US leadership will be able to implement all previous achievements in this direction and ensure that Ukraine not only survives, but really prospers.

Prehistory:

  • Trump previously assured that he “will not leave Ukraine” in his attempts to settle the Russian-Ukrainian war.
  • Recently, Ukraine’s European allies have expressed cautious optimism that Trump will not force Kyiv into premature negotiations with Russia.
  • And Biden, in his farewell speech, mentioned Ukraine in the context of foreign policy achievements and how he “strengthened NATO.”
