The National Music Academy of Ukraine named after P. I. Tchaikovsky has been renamed – from now on the institution is called the National Music Academy of Ukraine, the press service of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine reports.

The decision was made on the basis of the conclusion of the expert commission of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance, which determined that the use of the name of Pyotr Tchaikovsky in the name of the institution is a symbol of Russian imperial policy and does not correspond to the current legislation.

The Ministry of Culture notes that the renaming does not affect the status, educational process or artistic activity of the academy.

The next step will be a public discussion with the staff of the institution, the expert environment and the public on the issue of assigning a new name to the National Music Academy of Ukraine.

The educational institution has not yet commented on this decision of the Ministry of Culture.

In June 2022, the academic council of the institution appealed to the authorities not to change the name of the music academy. The representatives of the institution stated that it is a “high honor” for the music academy to “bear the name of the Ukrainian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who is one of the founders of the Kyiv Conservatory, whose work belongs to world art and is an integral part of the cultural history and spiritual heritage of Ukraine.”

At the same time, students and graduates of the National Music Academy of Ukraine named after P.I. Tchaikovsky presented an open letter for the renaming of the educational institution, because, in their opinion, “Tchaikovsky is a symbol of Russian culture”, and the world music community considers him a Russian composer.

In July 2022, the expert council of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy recommended abandoning the name of Tchaikovsky in the name of the Kyiv National Academy of Music.
