The Security Service of Ukraine reported on January 22 that its counterintelligence officers detained two men in Transcarpathia and Lviv Oblast who were “helping the enemy establish the consequences of the Oreshnyk attack on the civilian infrastructure of Lviv Oblast on the night of January 8-9, 2026.”

“According to the materials of the case, a 64-year-old resident of Mukachevo, who was recruited remotely by the enemy’s special services, and his 22-year-old unemployed neighbor were engaged in preliminary investigation of this shelling. SBU employees established that a junior agent had come from Transcarpathia to Lviv Oblast on the instructions of the GRU of the Russian Federation after the attack. He gradually went around the locations in the area of missile fire, photographed them and fixed the coordinates on Google maps. He then passed on the collected information to a “senior” agent who remained in Mukachevo and reported directly to the curator from the Russian special service,” the report states.

The SBU states that it detained both men at the same time: one at his place of residence in Mukachevo, and the other in the Lviv region, when “he was conducting reconnaissance near the place of the enemy’s “arrival.”

According to the report, during the searches, electronic devices with evidence of work for the Russian special service were seized from the detainees. “The SBU also intercepted the conversations of one of the agents with their supervisor. These audios are attached to the materials of the criminal proceedings,” the Ukrainian special service added.

SBU investigators informed the detainees about the suspicion under Part 2 of Art. 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (treason committed under martial law). The men are in custody and face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The Air Force of the Ukrainian Armed Forces announced on January 9 that the Russian Federation had launched Oreshnyk over Ukraine from the Kapustyn Yar range in the Astrakhan region. The Ministry of Defense of Russia admitted that it used the Oreshnyk medium-range ballistic missile to strike Lviv region, calling it a response to an alleged Ukrainian strike on the residence of Russian leader Vladimir Putin in the Novgorod region. Ukraine and its Western partners deny that such a strike took place, saying that Russia is thus trying to justify new attacks and delay peace talks.

The Security Service of Ukraine published a photo of the wreckage of the rocket found in the Lviv region. According to Ukrainian monitoring channels and the Russian BBC service, the missile was probably launched without a warhead or with dummy warheads.

British intelligence notes that Russian forces have carried out the second operational use of the Oreshnyk medium-range ballistic missile, which traveled approximately 1,622 km to its target.
