Despite attempts to sell this anti-aircraft missile system, Russia has never received a foreign customer for it.
In Russia, they hid information about the mass production of this equipment for quite a long time / an illustrative photo of the experimental model of the “Kama” anti-aircraft missile system, which the Russians converted into the “Sarma” At the World Defense Show 2026 exhibition, which will be held from February 8 to 12 in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), the defense and industrial complex of the Russian Federation intends to present its “latest” rocket salvo fire system “Sarma”, which in Russia is called “an analogue of HIMARS”. According to Defense Express, this is the second attempt when the Russians are trying to show this artillery system “for the first time”, while in fact the first time it was done almost 20 years ago.
Referring to the Defense News publication, analysts recalled that although the Sarma anti-aircraft missile system was introduced three years ago, in practice it is a continuation of the experimental 9A52-4 Kama system on the KamAZ-63501 chassis, the first version of which was shown in 2007. At that time, it was positioned as a system created primarily for the conditions of the Southeast Asian region.
“Since that time, the Russian Federation, despite trying to sell this MLRS, has never received a foreign customer for it. Moreover, for a long time, neither the Kama nor the Sarma were interested in the Russian occupation army. And only last year, data appeared that the Russian Federation allegedly purchased 12 MLRS and another 12 transport vehicles,” the article emphasized.
In addition, according to experts, the Russian occupiers hid information about the serial production and any possible exploitation of the Sarma MLRS at the front for quite a long time – only recently this month, Russian propagandists announced that the Russian army had begun “running in” its “HIMARS analogue” in combat operations.
“However, there are no real confirmations of this fact – photos or videos of the machine or, for example, the presence of already destroyed samples of weapons – so this statement remains controversial. The recently announced data that the “Sarma” allegedly has a maximum range of 200 km – the real range can reach 120 km thanks to guided projectiles of the 9M544 or 9M549 type – concluded in Defense Express.
Other gun newsDefense Express analysts previously said that the LMS-901 “Baikal” aircraft project faced a number of problems in Russia, so experts do not rule out that it may even be canceled, as they tried to do last year.
This is explained by the fact that at the final stage of the creation of the LMS-901, a number of critical design errors were made, which will take another three to five years to resolve.
It was also reported that Ukraine and Sweden discussed the transfer of Gripen and Meteor missiles. In addition, Sweden is preparing one of the largest packages of security assistance for Ukraine, which includes air defense, Saab radars, electronic warfare systems and drones.
