The Russian army lost more than 1,300 soldiers per day – data from the Armed Forces of Ukraine

Russian troops lost about 1,340 personnel during the previous day, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on the morning of January 18.

According to the staff’s assessment, the total losses of the Russian army during the full-scale war reached 817,160 soldiers.

The command also updated data on Russia’s losses in equipment:

  • 9,803 tanks
  • 20,394 armored combat vehicle (+13)
  • 22,040 artillery systems (+21)
  • 1,262 rocket salvo systems
  • 1,046 means of anti-aircraft defense
  • 369 aircraft
  • 331 helicopters
  • 22,579 drones of operational-tactical level (+13)
  • 3,049 cruise missiles
  • 28 ships and boats
  • 1 submarine
  • 34,325 cars and tankers (+69)
  • 3,699 units of special equipment.

Russia and Ukraine give almost no information about their losses in the war. Moscow officially last named the number of people killed in September 2022 – then 5,937 people died. Kyiv did not do this for a long time, saying that the data would be disclosed after the war.

On December 8, 2024, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, announced that since the beginning of the full-scale war, Ukraine has lost 43,000 soldiers killed and 370,000 wounded. According to his data, the losses of the Russian Federation exceed 750 thousand – 198 thousand dead and more than 550 thousand wounded.

The head of the Pentagon said on December 7 that Russia lost at least 700,000 soldiers during the large-scale war against Ukraine and spent more than 200 billion dollars on it.

The total losses of the military of Russia and Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale war of the Russian Federation in 2022 could exceed one million – such an estimate was given by the newspaper The Wall Street Journal on September 17. The WSJ estimated the number of Ukrainian soldiers killed at 80,000, Russian at approximately 200,000. About 400,000 people in the Ukrainian army and 400,000 in the Russian army were wounded, the newspaper writes.

Kyiv, commenting on data published by The Wall Street Journal about Ukraine’s losses in the war, said that the real figure is “much lower.”
