Details: Kavelashvili is among the deputies who split from “Georgian Dream” and joined the “Power of the People” party and were distinguished by harsh anti-Western statements.
Kavelashvili was number 18 on the Georgian Dream party list in the October 26 parliamentary elections.
“Mikheil Kavelashvili needs no special introduction to the public. For years, as a successful football player, he defended the honor of Georgia. Misha was an experienced football player of the Georgian national team. He is a multiple champion of several countries…
By his nature, if you will, by his habit, he is the best embodiment of a Georgian person. He is a wonderful husband and father of four children,” Ivanishvili said.
Kavelashvili personally thanked Ivanishvili for his trust and stated that his task will be to return the presidential institute to the “constitutional framework”.
Kavelashvili started his football career in “Lokomotiv” Tbilisi, played in “Dynamo”, as part of which he became the six-time champion of Georgia. He was also a player of the Vladikavkaz club “Spartak-Alania” and “Manchester City” and played for various clubs in Switzerland. He played 46 matches for the Georgian national team.
For the first time in Georgia, the president will be elected indirectly. This should be done by the electoral college of 300 people.
Salome Zurabishvili was the last female president to be directly elected in a general election. Her mandate ends in December 2024.
Prehistory:
- The Georgian opposition does not recognize the election results and is boycotting the work of the parliament.
- On the day of the first meeting of the new parliament, on November 25, a large protest was called. Some of the protesters gathered the day before and spent the night on Rustaveli Avenue.
